Are you ready for a divorce?

iStock-divorce.jpgHow do you know if you're ready to get a divorce? If your spouse asks for one, you may have no choice. However, what if you and your spouse seem to just be uneasily drifting along, unhappily together? When is it time to call an end to a marriage?

Experts say that people often think about divorce for a long time -- but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're ready for the reality of it. How do you know that you're ready for divorce?

1. You're making the decision "cold."

Making the decision to seek a divorce when you're angry or upset is often unwise. If you feel calm and cool about your decision, you're more likely to be ready to handle the consequences of that choice.

2. You're ready to give up on the life you pictured.

When you married your spouse, you pictured a future together. If you no longer picture that future and are able to see yourself living alone (possibly for good), then you're probably really emotionally prepared for a divorce.

3. You accept that you won't be able to keep your current life.

Divorce most likely means giving up your home, certain friends and even some of your habits. Your financial picture will change and you'll have to part with some of your possessions. If that's something you can accept, you may truly be ready for a divorce.

4. You're prepared for the fallout with your family.

If you have children, it doesn't matter whether they're minors or adults. Your divorce will affect them. You aren't really ready for a divorce until you recognize that there will be a period of adjustment that can be painful for everyone involved.

If you've read this and still feel like you're ready to go through with getting a divorce, then it's time to find out more about your options.
